Heat Pumps: Efficient Technology Needs Skilled Professionals
Heat pumps are a key solution for decarbonising the building sector. By using renewable energy from the air, ground or water, they provide heating and cooling with significantly lower energy consumption compared to conventional systems. This makes them essential for achieving Europe’s climate and energy targets.
✔ Use renewable energy (air, ground, water)
✔ High energy efficiency
✔ Reduce emissions and energy costs
✔ Key technology for clean heating
⚠️ Skills are essential for performance and reliability
In addition to their environmental benefits, heat pumps can offer long-term cost savings, especially when combined with energy-efficient buildings. However, their performance is highly dependent on correct system design, installation and operation.
The RE-ENERGIZE project highlights that one of the main barriers to large-scale deployment is not the technology itself, but the lack of adequately trained professionals.
Many installers and technicians currently working in the sector have experience with traditional systems, but need additional competencies to work with modern heat pump technologies, including system integration, diagnostics and compliance with energy efficiency requirements.
To address this, RE-ENERGIZE has developed a Capacity Building Framework (CBF), designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical, hands-on experience. The training programme covers key topics such as heat pump technologies, system design, installation, commissioning and maintenance, ensuring that professionals are equipped to meet current market demands.
